Sarah Q. Stevens-(May 12, 2012 Las Cruces, NM)-It was a CRAZY night at “the Park” on Friday night. With rains and wind delaying the show…………but as anyone who knows us knows……….the show went on!! And we do appreciate our loyal fans and racecar drivers for sticking with us through it to get a night of racing in.
Heat race action got started much later than we would have liked with the USRA Limited X-Modifieds. Heat 1 would go to the #12 of Rob Madrid, Heat 2 would go to the #50 of Austin Adams, and Heat 3 would go to the #22 of Jonathan Barcena. The Main event however, would prove to be quite a race. Losing 2 very strong competitors in the M1Z of Javier Zapien, Jr. and the 07 of Donovan Flores (last race winner) to the wall in turn 4. It would be last year’s USRA Limited X-Modified Champion Pat Carney in the 5X taking home the win after an end of the race surge to edge out Jonathan Barcena in the #22. Barcena was undeniably one of the fastest cars out there last night and is proving to be a force in the Limited X-Mod Class. Keep watching to see where the battle for this year’s championship may take us.
The Sisbarro Super Trucks racing the first of their Dual City Championship race, would find Silver City’s John Delph in the #41 taking Heat 1 and no surprise here………….the #43 of Garrett Alberson taking Heat 2. In what would turn out to be a faaaaaasst track for the Super Trucks, we would once again see the #43 of Garrett Alberson taking the checkered flag and the victory. However, it was not without fierce competition from John Delph in his #41 machine, and Mike Day in the #9. It was no easy task to get to the front for Garrett Alberson, and you will have to stay tuned to see if anyone is able to stop his winning streak.
In USRA Street Stock Racing, where it appears the rivalries are forming, it would be the #55 of Frank Ray, Jr taking Heat 1. Jerrad Warhurst in the #7 taking Heat 2, and “Charging” Troy Wells in the #83 taking Heat 3. The best way to describe the Main Event for the USRA Street Stocks………….well it would be TIRES!!!!!! If they weren’t coming off the cars prior the race even starting, or in turn 1……..they were getting cut. Losing the #21 of Colby Ellis and team mate #7 of Jerrad Warhurst to tires just falling off, we also would see the leader of the race the #55 of Frank Ray, Jr. leave the track with a cut tire, and the #41 of Steve Jones………who definitely was headed in the right direction for the win losing a tire. But in the end with the crowd’s hands up in the air and on their feet……..it would be “Charging” Troy Wells in the #83 taking the win with the #202 of Bryan Wells very close behind.
I am not sure how the ASCS Renegade Sprints managed to do it……….but they did!! Even with the moisture and the mud, they put on a show for the loyal fans. Heat 1 would go to the #1M of Dylan Harris with Heat 2 going to the #36 of Joe Alvarado. The finishing order of the heat races would prove pretty intense during the Main Event, as it would the #1M of Dylan Harris being black flagged for rough driving after the #36 of Joe Alvardo flipped on the back straight away after contact. With quite a bit of blocking and slight bumping going on between the 2 at least 2 laps prior to the “Wild Ride” that Alvarado took. But the real show, coming from the pole position to lap almost up to 3rd place, it would be the #9k of Kyle Sager taking the checkered and the victory. Joking with his mom prior to the race, I think this really may have been her Mother’s Day Gift. And we will have to wait to see if tonight at Southern New Mexico Speedway, he can repeat his performance.
