(El Paso, Texas)-The El Paso Speedway Park has one week left in the 2010 season as four champions were crowned this past Friday night, August 20, 2010, with the Barnett Harley Davidson UMP West Modifieds, Super Trucks, Legends, and Hornets running their final races of the 2010 season with the Street Stocks set to close their season on August 27, 2010 with the Renegade Sprint Car Series, Advanced Towing Limited Late Models, and Limited X-Mods in the 2010 ACR Supply Season Finale presented by Master Cool.
Staring off the nights Main Events would be the Super Trucks as Walton Kyle Sr. would jump out to the race lead with the battle for second shaping up with Nita Deetz, Sherman Barnett, and Walton Kyle Jr. battling as the 22 of Deetz would take the position for a moment before the 82 of Barnett shot to the high line to take over the runner up spot. In pursuit, Barnett would begin to reel in the 6 of Walton Kyle Sr. as both drivers began to run away from the field. As the battle for the lead began to shape up, the other battle on the track was for the 2010 Championship as Dave Deetz entered the A-Main with a 10 point advantage over Tom Mahle. With Mahle rounding out the top five, the 29 would see the opportunity to move up and try and get the advantage on the 1 of Deetz who was running eighth. Into third with the 29 as the laps began to show close to the checkered flag with Sherman Barnett running away with the race win. Ismail Garcia, Tom Mahle, Nita Deetz, and Kenny Alons rounded out the top five with the 1 of Dr. Dave Deetz holding on to win the 2010 Super Truck Championship with a seventh place finish.
Next to the racing surface was the Legends of the Southwest for twenty laps of racing as the battle for the race lead was good from the start as Vince Malone took the top spot early with Don Reynolds working into second and Allen Gattis up to third as all three drivers began battling for the race lead. Working past lapped traffic, the 85m of Malone continued to lead as the 21 of Gattis and the 3d of Reynolds worked side by side before the 3d nearly spun, handing second to the 21 with fourteen laps to go as the field raced to the caution. Green flag and the 3d wasted no time getting back to second as Reynolds worked on Malone for the lead with the 3d making the pass. With less than ten laps to go, the 21 of Gattis worked into second and quickly began going to work on Don Reynolds for the top spot. Side by side with five laps to go the 21 of Gattis worked high as with Reynolds as the 21 pulled off the pass for the lead but it wouldn’t hold as Allen Gattis drove back to the top spot in a drag race with Don Reynolds at the checkered flag. Vince Malone, Jonathan Barcena, and Robert Sheppard rounded out the top five. With his second place finish, the 3d of Don Reynolds would pick up the 2010 Legends of the Southwest Championship.
To the Hornets as the 005 of Jose Duran showed the way with Cory Brownwood on the move as the 8 worked the race lead. Further back in the field, the battle to be in the top five would turn ugly as the half way point loomed. Contact between the 18 of Gary Mays and the 4 of Terry Scott would send the 4 around; leaving Mike Mays with nowhere to go as the 88 slammed into Scott, destroying the left rear portion of the 4. Luckily, Terry was able to walk away but walked away steamed as he let his frustration be known in several hand gestures (among other things) towards the 18 who was able to continue. As the track was cleared, the race resumed with Brownwood able to pull away to take the win with Jose Duran, Gary Mays, Ronnie Navarette, and Mike Mays running from the last row to round out the top five thus taking the 2010 Championship.
The West Texas Street Stocks to the racing surface as the Mingo Jauregui leading to start off the A-Main. Working three wide, the 88 of Ozzie Noder, 33h of Mark Kimpel, and the 15x of Sean Bowman battled for fourth; going three wide with Noder grabbing the spot. Working in second, the 13 of David Fountain would look to make the run on Jauregui for the lead as slower traffic would become an issue as the 53 of Garrett Stearns would hold up the 47 only to hold up the 13 just as Fountain looked to have a open door for the lead before the caution waved for Sean Bowman. To the restart, the 33h of Mark Kimpel would get a good jump to run in third. In second, the 77g of Julian Garcia would start to work on Mingo Jauregui for the lead as Kimpel worked into the picture to make it a three car battle for the top spot with less than five laps to go. Up to second, the 33h would dive to the bottom of Speedway Park to take away the top spot but just as quickly as he took it, one mistake would cost the 33h the top spot as the 47 shot back to the lead with the white flag waving to take the win. Kimpel would take second with David Fountain, Ozzie Noder, and Jacob Rodriguez rounded out the top five.
As the final thirty laps were set to get underway for the UMP DIRTcar West Modifieds at the El Paso Speedway Park, the 23 car field formed up into their traditional 4-wide salute to the fans with the battle for the championship all tied up. To the green flag and the 88c of Brian Clark would show the way as the Tucson, Arizona racer would begin to pull away before the caution waved for the 111 of Bumper Jones who came to a rest in the middle of turn two after being collected by Dickie Gorham; a wreck that would also collect Christy Georges. To the restart, the 2s of Scott would work into second to begin going after the 88c. Working the bottom, the 2s would push up the track allowing the 88c to pull away. Running down Clark again, Scott would have to run the car in as hard as he could to keep the front end from washing up the track but the real race changer would be in slower traffic. By one, by two, the 88c and the 2s would find themselves think slower traffic. In and out, splitting cars and going wheel to wheel the 88c of Clark continued to show the way as Scott’s car would continue to push in the middle of corner. Trying to pull away, the 88c would end up crawling the right side of a slower car but somehow held the top spot. Still in heavy lapped traffic, the G17 of Fito Gallardo would run down the top two cars as Gallardo would work into second on the high line when Stormy went sideways on the bottom before the caution waved as the J7 of Jake Boles and the 71 of Don Gorham saw their night end when the lapped car of Chad Falco spun down the front straight leaving Boles and Don Gorham with nowhere to go. To the restart with nine laps to run and the G17 would hook a hole to give second back to Stormy Scott as the field bunched up with the 121 of Holly Jones spinning through turns on and two as the 2s of Scott dove it deep for the slide job to grab the lead into turns three and four as the 121 got her car re-fired as the track stayed green. Up to second, the 71 of Paul Banghart would move pass the G17 as would the 88c of Brian Clark as the two Tucson drivers began to duke it out for the runner up sport as the laps clicked to zero, with the 2s of Stormy Scott running unchallenged to the win and the 2010 UMP West Modified Championship. Paul Banghart, Brian Clark, Fito Gallardo, and Christy Georges would round out the top five after having to drop to the tail of the field at the start of the race.
